Grilled Fish for Breakfast

Kurogane poked at the tear in his cloak with a frown. "Hey," he asked Fai, "you don't happen to have a needle and thread on you, do you?"

Fai looked up from the pan of fish he was tending. "Aaa?" He shifted and grabbed a corner of material, tugging until he could study the hole himself. "Naa, they got pretty close, didn't they?" he asked with a smile, before letting go. "Kuro-sama surely is a great warrior, if that's his only injury."

"Of course it is and of course I am," Kurogane unfastened the cloak and laid it beside the small fire. "I'll have to trust it to the village washer women."

"You killed a lot of their mages, didn't you?" Fai was looking critically at the surrounding battlefield. "One of them should have what you need."

Kurogane studied the bodies that lay nearby before standing and striding over to one to riffle through its pockets. "Huh," he muttered as he found a pocket bursting with many different colored threads.

Fai smiled at him, flipping the fish in the pan. "There's a lot of magic that can be done with strings," he said quietly. "The needle is for guidance."

"You don't carry any," Kurogane said casually, sitting himself cross-legged next to the magician and threading the needle he'd taken off the dead man.

"I don't practice anymore," Fai said with a shrug. He slid the fish out of the pan. "Soy sauce?" he asked and, at Kurogane's nod, gave it a liberal sprinkle before exchanging the fish for the cloak. "You eat, let me sew. The men say that the next wave of the army will come before noon."
