Notes: All of the stories I am posting for this set of prompts take place not only in the same fandom, but in the same alternate universe, and are connected to each other, though they are not necessarily in a set order.

The story holds that the Order of Heroes turned to the Summoner to save the Kingdom of Askr from the Empire of Embla. That prophecy has been fulfilled many times in many worlds, but not in every world.

In one world, the Summoner used the Heroes he summoned to instead conquer the Kingdom of Askr and become its master, driving the royal family into exile as he turned his attention to the Empire of Embla and threatened its borders.

Prince Alfonse, Princess Sharena, and Commander Anna then turned to their greatest enemies, Princess Veronica and Prince Bruno, to ally against the Summoner by using their combined powers to travel through the gates and gather Heroes from across all the worlds to challenge him and his Order. The peace between them is fragile and uneasy, but it is all that they have.

Alfonse and Bruno hurry to the World of Shadows – one of many worlds to bear that name – in search of a young priestess ....

"I hope you're aware of how great a gamble this is, Alfonse." The voice of Zacharias – no, of Bruno, Alfonse had to remind himself – broke the silence as the ship swayed to and fro, the sea underneath it promising no rest.

"Are you going to tell me that your blood is calling for me again, Bruno?" Alfonse sighed. "Because I do get tired of hearing about that."

"That's one aspect of it, but ... no." The man in the mask had a neutral expression in the dimness of the cabin. "All three of you are placing yourselves in our power. Who is to say that, once the threat of the Summoner is averted, we won't simply imprison you? Or kill you? You have no guarantee from either my sister or myself. There's no trust between us here."

Alfonse considered his words for a moment before replying, "Trust isn't automatic. It has to be earned. I'm hoping that I can achieve that." He added, only to himself, I trusted you as Zacharias, and you are going to have to earn that back. You might not say anything about it, but —

A short bark of a laugh from Bruno. "And you hope to bring a whole army of Heroes to your side simply by convincing them of the worth of your cause? You would be best served by relying on our contracts, but I suppose that's too much for your code." His mouth formed a grim line beneath his mask. "I applaud you for continuing to be who you are, but that code's going to be tested."

"Honestly, I hope so." Alfonse closed his eyes. "But that's why I picked this world first. If anybody's going to take up arms and help us, it'll be her."

"If you're remembering your history books correctly." Bruno folded his arms across his chest. "You don't exactly have access to the castle library any more, so you'd better hope your memory holds up." A hint of a smirk. "What if this is a world where she dies early in her voyage and never meets Alm?"

"Then I'll –" Alfonse caught himself. "Don't make me doubt myself. If that's her fate here, then having her come with us will just ... make it right."

"And how do you know that saving her from such a death is the right thing? What if it's the only way for this specific version of her world to know peace?" Still, Bruno smirked. "That's the real gamble, Alfonse. That's the risk you run when you're searching for Heroes instead of summoning them. The real power of the Breidablik isn't summoning. It's breaking the chains of fate."

"I ... don't know, Bruno." Alfonse set his jaw in a scowl. "But you're not going to stop me from trying. We're going to do this, and that's that."

Bruno shrugged. "Don't think that I intend to stop you. All I'm doing is trying to make you aware that what you're doing has consequences."

Alfonse opened his mouth to reply, but a call from above informed both of them that another ship had been sighted, and he changed what he was going to say, instead stating, as he rose from his seat, "That will be her. Let's go."

"You should go on your own." Bruno rested his hands on his knees. "If you're looking to persuade her without using my ... methods, she won't be suspicious if it's just you. Having a hulking masked man behind you wouldn't help."

"I'd say that you're joking, but ... you're right." Alfonse took a deep breath. "Just you wait, Bruno. I'll surprise you with what I can achieve."

After he departed, Bruno said to himself, "I hope that you do."

END.
