[Aug 3] [Cowboy Bebop] The Tragic Hero

Day/Theme: August 3 - Like Hamlet
Series: Cowboy Bebop
Character/Pairing: Spike/Julia
Rating: G

“Don’t be a hero, Spike.” She was sitting there so quietly, as if the world wasn’t collapsing around her, and all he could do was stare.

“What are you talking about?” Always a mystery to him, always hiding behind her sad smile. There it was again, slow and soft. She stood up and walked toward the bookcase, fingering the spines of the countless tomes given to her by Vicious.

“It won’t end well. It never does. The road to hell is paved with good intentions.” Sometimes she even sounded like him, hiding behind vague proverbs and axioms; never saying exactly what she meant. If he didn’t know how passionate she could be, he would think her heart as cold as that bastard’s. For a while, he believed exactly that. The course of love never did run smooth. It never would, if things stayed as they were.

“I have to do something! I just can’t let it go, let it happen.” He always felt like an irrational idiot around her, a loose cannon with no control over his emotions.

“You won’t save me, you won’t save yourself.” Especially when she was right. She had to say things so simply, to make failure and death sound so matter of fact, it just made him want to scream even louder.

“Then what’s the point of it all? Why the hell am I even alive if I can’t change things?” How could she just sit there and take it? Take his screaming, for one; take Vicious’ threats, on the other. It was like some Shakespearean tragedy, and she was the character who was going to die; perhaps take the hero with her.

“Isn’t that the question? To be or not to be…” He wanted to tell her to shut up, to stop reading his thoughts and to stop touching those filthy books, those books purchased with blood and deceit.

“Stop talking like that Julia. Stop making it sound so hopeless. We have to get out of this.” What would she do if he dragged her away by force? Would she still be so serene? Would she go with him willingly? Would she come to life again?

Would they both die?

Isn’t that the way tragedies always end?

i'm so pushing it with the posting times on these....
