Summary: Introspective to Gentaro’s school days. 

Comment. Title and Italicised words quoted from Kipling’s Just So Stories: The Cat that walked by Himself. 

The mocking cries echo behind him even as he paces through the corridors calmly, expression neutral. 

I am the Cat. 

Coolly, he fishes his textbooks out of the mud, holding them gingerly by his side. At least his homework is protected in a plastic bag stuffed down the front of his shirt. 

Who walks by himself. 

Carefully, he picks his way through the canteen, stepping over obstacles, avoiding the outstretched limbs that try to trip him up. 

And all places are alike to me. 

He can feel their hate slowly turning to bewilderment.  After all, he offers no resistance or overt retaliation. 

At some point,  the physical beatings stop in favor of simply shutting him out altogether.  

It matters little. He’s keeping up with the lessons and his lack of extracurricular activities has left him free to read, to dream and to imagine escapes into increasingly detailed fantasy worlds. 

Afterall, they can’t hurt what they can't touch.
