November 10 / Cold Mountain / "After the Rain"
Title: After the Rain
Day/Theme: November 10 / The brightest heaven of invention
Series: Cold Mountain
Character/Pairing: Ada Monroe / Inman (more like thoughts about Inman, actually...)
Rating: PG
Notes: I don't own the characters. They all belong to Charles Frazier (for the novel).
The first time I looked down Sally Swanger's well, I saw you coming down a slope of white, waving at me. I was sure you were going to come back to me. And that image haunted me for so very long.
I can't count how many letters I wrote to you, my love. I thought about you as I wrote. I thought about you as I played the piano. Even as Ruby Thewes came to the farm to help me rebuild what was left of it.
That girl once screamed, "They call this war a cloud over the land. But they made the weather and then they stand in the rain and say 'Shit, it's raining!'"
And I would think she was right. You marched into a battle that cost us all too much and too little at the same time.
I never wanted to believe the magic of Sally Swanger's well. How was it possible that something as plain as a well could be an instrument for people to see into the future?
I think now that Sally's well isn't really that magical at all... but it serves its purpose well and helps us look into what haunts us in our hearts and in our minds.
The thoughts of your return plagued me everyday. My heart was torn between wanting to follow you to wherever it is you were and to remaining in Cold Mountain so I could welcome you with open arms.
Inman, I hope to God that you're in Heaven now and watching over me and your daughter. I hope you and Daddy, the two important men in my life, are proud of me. I survived my past and allowed my future to give me a chance.
I no longer look into Sally's well. Now, I can see the future and it shines as brightly as the sun.
