„Grace! We are not ready yet!“ Danny's voice boomed through the room, but the door fall shut with a loud bang anyway. „Grace. You will not...“
Steve eyed him, smirking wide. „Great.“
„Stay out of this.“
Shaking his head, Steve turned to the bar to pour in two glasses of good, old Whiskey. It was much too early for a drink, but it seemed needed. „You are such a dumbass. She has worked up the courage to tell you her deepest secret and all you do is to yell at her?“
Danny huffed. „A secret? A secret is when she tells me that she has started to smoke or that she drunk too much at the last party. This is something I can deal with. But... a Jennifer? She wants to be together with another woman? Because... she loves her? And I have never heard about her before? I don't know what going on there, but this is not Grace!“
Steve leaned against the bar counter. „She's not six anymore, Danny, she wants to go her own way, even if this means to make the one or the other mistake.“
„She is eighteen. And obviously she doesn't know what she is doing. This will ruin her future; she wanted to go to college, study veterinary medicine.“
„You know, this is the reason, why she kept it secret for almost half a year.“ Steve placed a glass of Whiskey in front of Danny. „She knew you would overreact.“
„I am not overreacting,“ Danny yelled. „She is... Wait! Half a year? What do you know? Did she tell you...“
„Yeah. First love can be pretty confusing. She needed to talk to someone.“
„And you pretend to be my friend?“ Danny jumped up, grabbing for Steve's collar. „You knew all the time, and you didn't think that I should know about this?“
„It was not my business to tell you. She trusted me, and I did listen to her. That's all.“
The grip tightened. Danny clenched his fist, and Steve knew it was time to stop him before this got out of control. „Hey, don't overstep the line. Calm down and start to think clearly again. A drama is not very helpful and won't change anything.“
„Oh God.“ Danny blinked and finally loosened his grip. Looking pale he dropped down on his chair again and buried his face in his hands. „How can I tell Rachel? I've promised her to keep an eye on Grace.“
„And you did a good job. Grace is grown up to a smart and self-confident young woman. She will make her way.“
„Together with another woman.“ Danny grabbed his glass took a sip, then another one. „I've always told her to follow her heart, but I haven't expected something like this.“
„Could be worse.“ Steve shrugged. „Jennifer seems to be okay; goes to College, works part-time in one of the tourist resorts at the west coast. Not drugs or wild parties.“ He laughed when he noticed Danny's slightly confused look. „What? Of course, I did check her background when Grace told me. Just to be sure."
„Oh.“
„Best you can do is to accept her decision and to let things slide. If this is what she wants, you can't do anything against it. But maybe it is only a phase. An adventure. She is curious and wants to test out her limits.“
„Hm. Since when you are expert for 18-year-old teenager?“
Steve laughed. „Hard to believe, I know, but once I was eighteen, too. Overstepped every rule, wild parties. And one day I met him. Terry. We did hang out for a while, and a bit more.“
„Nice try,“ Danny smirked. „ But you and gay? No way.“
„Not gay, just curious. We spend an exciting time during summer. Talked about leaving everything behind, move to San Francisco and to live in an artist's colony. Then I met Janet, long legs, big boobs. And I decided that there is more waiting for me than only one guy.
Give her the time she needs to find out what she wants to do with her life.“
„And then she will come back to me?“
There was so much hope in Danny's voice but Steve shook his head. „She has never left you. You are Danno, her dad, and no other guy or woman will ever come between you two. All she asks for is that you trust her and give her the freedom she needs to live her own life.
Slowly Danny put his glass down. „Shit. Guess I should go and look after her, huh?“
„Not the worst idea, I would say.“
