Cold stone beneath Firion's untidy sprawl. Cold, and lifeless. Above him, empty void where the sky should have been. Yet in the pitiful remnants glimpsed before he measured his length in the stony rubble, Firion was sure he'd seen the wild rose ...
Despair closed in.
A lance of flame bored between his shoulder blades.
The purring voice rolled over him again, mockingly --
"It took a small effort, of course. A bit of effort, a few sacrificial pawns.
"I will rule the ashes, whelp, and this time --
"Oh, this time you shall dance for me."
