Knock, knock, knock.
Ais, after sticking a long pin in her blonde hair to keep it piled on top of her head, opened the reinforced door to her chambers to find a grimacing Lefiya standing in front of her, her long ears pointed upwards, her knuckles white as her hands clutched her staff.
"Lefiya. You're angry," Ais said, not blinking, tilting her head slightly to one side as she adjusted the long pin. "Why?"
"I –" Lefiya shook her head. "I'm coming in!" She did, though she paused to avoid slamming the door behind her. "Yes, I'm angry!" She caught herself. "I'm, um, not angry at you, though, Ais."
"Oh. That's good." Ais thought for a second. "Then what's wrong?"
"I talked to Bell," Lefiya replied, her grimace deepening, "so that I could get angry. That way, I wouldn't hesitate."
"Oh." Ais had a seat at the small vanity – a gift from Riveria – next to her bed, turning her back to Lefiya, though she asked, as she rummaged through one of its drawers and reached for one of her favorite long-toothed combs, "What did you talk about, then?"
"That's –" Lefiya shook her head. "That's not important. We didn't really talk about anything. I just wanted to see him so that I'd get annoyed enough to storm off and come see you instead."
Ais did not pause as she removed the long pin and started running the comb through her hair. "That doesn't sound very productive."
Lefiya said, setting down her staff in order to free up both of her hands for gesticulating, "That wasn't the point! I said I got angry so that I wouldn't hesitate when I came here to talk to you."
Ais still faced the vanity, combing her hair. "You talk to me normally all the time. You don't have to get angry to do that."
"W-Well, I –" Lefiya forced her hands down to her sides to keep them from moving, though she still fidgeted. "Maybe there are things that I can't just come out and say in a normal conversation? Maybe there are things that I need courage to say?"
Ais did not reply, though she did set down her comb and turn to face Lefiya, resting her hands on her knees. "What things, Lefiya?"
At that, Lefiya froze, and her face turned red, though she made herself say, through clenched teeth, "Things. About ... stuff."
Ais repeated the question, her face calm. "What things are those?"
Lefiya turned from red to a light purple, and Ais almost reached for her to start her breathing again before she blurted, the words emerging in a rush of air, "That I've always liked you!"
The calm remained undisturbed. "Oh. Well, I like you, too, Lefiya."
Lefiya blinked in disbelief for a second before she added, "Um. Do you understand what I just said to you, Ais. I like you."
A polite half-smile that reeked of obliviousness. "Thank you."
"No, no, no, no." Lefiya had enough exasperation in her face to make both her ears twitch. "When I say I like you, it means I want to be your girlfriend." She sighed, and she could not resist waving her fists in the air. "That's why I'm always mad at Bell! He likes you, too, but I saw you first, and –" Horror filled her expression. "– I've said too much."
Ais looked up at the ceiling for a long moment, deep in thought, before she said, "My girlfriend." She looked at Lefiya again, contemplating her like she represented a question of deep philosophy. "I think ... I'd like that." The polite smile returned, but it contained a note of apology. "I don't know much about having a girlfriend, though. It's not something I –"
"I know you don't think about that kind of thing," Lefiya interrupted, "but I've been thinking about it for a very long time, and I had to ask you because it's been driving me crazy." She flopped onto the floor, dropping to her knees in front of Ais. "But I feel better, now that I've said it."
"I will try," Ais said. "Come here." Lefiya scooted forward, and Ais patted her on the head, making her blush. "How is that?"
"It's, um –" Lefiya stammered. "It's really nice, but –" She took a deep breath to calm herself. "Girlfriends want more than just head pats." She abruptly stood up again. "I-I-I'm going to –" She leaned forward, but, to her complete surprise, Ais kissed her first, and it took her a second to remember to close her eyes.
It took her another second to remember to come up for air.
"Like that?" Ais asked. She did not seem the least bit flushed.
"L-Like that." Lefiya had a sheepish look on her face. "Where ... did you learn – ?" Ais blinked, not understanding. "Or is that just one more thing that you're naturally good at?"
"I ... don't know." And Ais genuinely seemed not to know. "Did you like it?" Again, the smile. "Or should I try again?"
"If you try again –" Lefiya softened her voice. "– I feel like my insides might melt." Again, Ais tilted her head. "I mean, if you try again right now, that's how I'll feel. We'll definitely try again. Just not ... right now." She hugged herself. "I mean, I just got my first kiss from the one person I really and truly wanted to kiss. Let me just ... savor that for a little while."
Again, Ais reached out and patted her head. "You handled that well."
And Lefiya replied, looking equal parts happy and miserable, "I wish you weren't so dense, sometimes." Another sigh. "And I wish I wasn't so dense, either." She looked at Ais again. "So ... is that a yes? Can I be your girlfriend, Ais?"
"I said I'd like that." She rose to her feet. "And I think your insides won't melt." Before Lefiya had a chance to protest, Ais was kissing her again, and all her worries started to evaporate.
END.
