Kain stalked the low battlements slowly, deliberately, attention on the cadets in the courtyard below.
Their sudden scrambling told him they weren't prepared for his sudden appearance. Well, then; their captains were, perhaps, becoming slack. He'd have to have a few words with them come evening. But the corps was growing, the youngsters themselves still promising. Good.
He paused to study the swift-assembled formations, weathered features impassive; his iron-grey hair, caught in the breeze, his only movement. Then he moved on.
Strange, he thought, to remember years of bitter frustration and not see them reflected back.
Strange, and strangely humbling.
