Rating: PG13
Words: 403
Prompt: On the road again

On the road again. Jeremiah was driving through the night, alone, aimlessly. Like he did for almost 15 years. It was easier this way than to stay in one place. The guilt feeling always caught up with him as soon as he came to rest.

He hadn't been able to save his little brother, though he had promised it. His father, who was working in a secret military laboratory, had foreseen the danger long before anyone else. And he had asked him to take care of Billy, no matter what would happen. „Don't forget, Jeremiah,“ he had told him, “the children need to survive. They are the future of the world.“

Some months later it had started; the virus took over the world, and no one seemed to be able to stop it. The adults died, only the children survived. Billy didn't. He got shot when he tried to steal a sausage; he had been so hungry, though Jeremiah had given him the last heel of bread in the morning. He died in his arms.

Since then Jeremiah preferred to be on the road alone. Until one day he met Isabell. She was pretty and smart, she didn't talk much, but her smile was warm and honest, when she offered him a bed to stay for one night. It turned into three weeks, and in her arms, he could finally find some peace again, without nightmares tormenting him.

It didn't last, though. One morning Isabell told him about her secret dream, which had kept her alive all the time. The old fishing boat of her father, moored on the wooden dock at the small river, hadn't been used anymore since her parents were gone, like everyone's parents, but unlike the house, she was living into, with broken windows, a leaky roof, only spartan furnished, the boat was in an excellent state.

„I've waited for this day since thirteen years, three months and four days,“ she told him.“I have hoarded up every bit of fuel I could find. Now, I guess, it's enough. Tonight I will leave everything behind, and I will travel to the horizon.“ She turned around and smiled. „Already as a child, I was wondering what is hiding behind it.“

And he knew this was the end for the two of them. Reaching for the horizon was her future, not his. For him only remained the road and his nightmares.
