"Surtr is gone, and Múspell has been defeated," Gunnthrá said, turning her head to look at Kiran as she lay next to him in his bed. "Yes, Embla is still a threat, but Bruno and Veronica have both disappeared, and the Order is searching for them. This peace might be temporary, but it continues to be peace." She kissed him on the forehead. "Do not let your worries steal your sleep from you, for I am here to defend you from them."

"Don't think that I'm ungrateful," Kiran mumbled, holding her close, enjoying the scent of her hair, "but there are so many unanswered questions, and I don't know how much time we have to solve the mysteries before the next attack comes." He stared up at the ceiling. "Sure, we've won, but the Askran army's depleted, the countryside's in ruins, and we're doing everything we can just to stave off famine. The Order's there, but it's getting to the point that the Order is all there is. We can do a lot, but we can't do everything." He sighed. "Sooner or later, we won't be considered heroes any more."

"That is not for you to judge, beloved," Gunnthrá replied, using one finger to tap him on the nose. "History will look back on all that the Order has done, that you have done, and know that it was for the best in the end, no matter how many obstacles have been placed in your way." She snuggled up to him. "I understand your fears, but the fall of Surtr is no small deed. That alone will guarantee you a place in legend." A soft smile, the same that reminded him of how swiftly he had fallen for her. "After that, I doubt anything will be truly impossible for you. Never stop believing in yourself."

"And in my friends," he amended. "That's what Ike would say, anyway." He nodded, kissing her on top of her head. "I know that's the right thing to do, and I know that what you're saying is true, it's just –" A self-deprecating chuckle. "– try getting my heart to do what my head keeps telling it is the right thing. It's just ... one long pain in my ass."

"Language," she said, putting no force behind the admonishment.

END.
