Title: Creeper 'Round the Tree
Day / Prompt: 14 / A Strangling Vine

"All of my pieces are –" Kiran stared down at the board. "If I move one piece, it all comes down. You have your pieces positioned like –" She shook her head. "I have to concede, Virion. I have no choice. There's no winning the game from this position."
"Is there, though?" Virion steepled his fingers. "I developed this stratagem to test Robin. She called it the 'creeper 'round the tree' because of the circumstances you describe." He smirked. "Her insistence upon keeping all of her troops alive and still achieving victory is her weakness. Thus, I placed her in a situation that required her to make at least one sacrifice in order to escape from the trap. You face that same decision here." He leaned back in his chair. "The difference, in your case, is that any pieces you sacrifice can return from that sacrifice. Death is not the end for your heroes. Compared to Robin, you can afford to be fearless." His face turned grave. "That is important."
"But a hero can still feel the pain of dying, Virion." Kiran folded her hands. "Being summoned doesn't make them any less human. I can't just throw them away."
At that, Virion narrowed his eyes. "Forgive me for saying so, Summoner, but that is the voice of inexperience. No strategy dictated by fear can lead to victory. I managed to get Robin to understand that, and I need you to do the same if the Order is to succeed." He sighed. "Yes, there is pain in death, but there is also learning. Dying teaches us how to not to die a second time, and it will teach you how to improve your strategy."
Kiran had a hard look on her face. "Robin never turned into a monster, did she? You can't expect me to do what she didn't." She stared down at the board again. "I-I'm going to figure this out. Watch me. I'll do everything I can do to prove you're wrong here."
Virion nodded. "I hope that you do, Summoner. There is still time."
