He'd never been the promising one in the class; never the darling of the dojo, nor one to receive the praise of their sensei. He'd gotten used to it. It was not as important as mastering his lessons -- and proving his father wrong.
Now the time had come to do exactly that.
He heard the whispers, polite behind concealing fans. Who was that? Who was the Crane child who was showing so much skill?
It was a good question, but, honestly: why else was he here but to make his name?
Rayu's blade gleamed in the sunlight; he lunged, and --
