Kiran dropped the tome in her hands as Niles seemed to materialize from the darkness in her chambers, smirking at her as if he had been hired as the jester at Castle Askr.

"You need to stop doing that, Niles," she seethed, putting her finger in his face.

Niles kissed the tip of her finger, saying, as he pushed her hand to one side, "I don't think I'm ever going to get tired of surprising you, little girl from another world, but at least I'm here on a mission of mercy." He raised a brow. "Want to know what it is?"

"Knowing you, this probably has something to do with your idea that virginity is a tragic and fatal disease," Kiran grumbled, "but, in case it's actually serious, I'm listening."

"Funny that you should mention that." Niles chortled. "But, really, I think Reinhardt's waiting to hear your love confession. He's probably wondering which of your many hang-ups is getting in the way of you saying what you feel." Another smirk. "Shall I guess which one? Or shall I just list all of them off for you? I've got some time."

"Okay, look." Kiran could feel her anger rising up, though Niles remained as placid as always. "I'm not from any of these worlds. My values are very different from yours. I-I just can't walk up to a high-class nobleman and tell him I love him. I mean, next to him, I'm basically less than nobody. I don't even know what it is he thinks he sees in me."

"You're the Summoner." Niles shrugged. "You're a champion of Askran royalty. No one else can do what you do." He blew on his fingernails. "Or he's like me, and he doesn't really care where you come from. He just thinks you're cute in your own little way."

"But I can't stay here," Kiran sighed. "And ... neither can he. It's all temporary."

"You keep telling yourself that." The smirk disappeared. "You've been here several months already. It might be that Heroes like us are temporary in the grand scheme of things, but I get the feeling you're here to stay, even if you don't feel like you're a part of this world." He reached out to touch her cheek, and she flinched. "This is where you belong. Wherever you were before didn't appreciate your gifts, and now you're in a place that you can actually call home. Knowing Reinhardt, he wants to be your anchor, so that you don't feel like it'll all just blow away, one day, and take you with it."

"I –" She caught herself. "You've really been thinking about this, haven't you?"

"You're not a difficult person to read," he said, shrugging again. "Like you said, where you come from, you're really quite ordinary." A gleam in his eye. "That's why it bothers you so much to be in a place where people think of you as being so much more."

"Being with Reinhardt won't make me any less ordinary, you know," she said. "If anything, it'll just be something to drag him down, like his love for Ishtar did."

"Well, I don't know about you, but I'm a big believer in second chances, Summoner." Niles turned his back to her. "Leo gave me one, as I'm sure you well know. This world gave you one. Why not give Reinhardt one? For however long it lasts, I'm sure there's something in you that completes him. And maybe, just maybe, he'll fill that empty place inside you, too." He grinned at her over his shoulder. "Maybe you'll make some sparks fly, for once in your life? Magic is everything to him, but you're just a bit more."

Kiran thought about his words for a second before she said, "Thank you, Niles."

But Niles had already vanished.
