Another night at the library. Another night of almost no sleep. Kiran sighed, trying not to rub her eyes as she got into a car that had experienced its best days ten years ago. Studying had started to seem pointless, considering that she did not have enough money to pay her tuition for next semester. High marks pleased her instructors, but deposited nothing in her accounts. She had applied for grants, but she never seemed to qualify for any of them, and telling her parents that she intended to get a degree in the humanities had not inspired them to make any gestures beyond a roll of the eyes.

She had to schedule another appointment to see her advisor and try to explain the situation, but that explanation represented all she had to offer, and she had channeled all of that stress into studying. Night after night at the library in front of a stack of books and a laptop that liked to crash at least once almost every time she opened it. Night after night of feeling sick to her stomach because the doors in front of her continued to close. She barely allowed herself time to open up her 3DS and play Fire Emblem Fates. One year of having the game, and she had yet to complete the Conquest route.

And so Kiran sat in her car, sighing to herself as the engine reluctantly cooperated. The way things are going, I'm going to have a lot more time to play Fire Emblem. Maybe I'll be able to save up for the DLC while I'm running a drive-thru window? She shook her head. Got to try and stay positive. Just because I do that part-time doesn't mean I'm going to end up being a lifer. A thought occurred to her as she rested her hands on the steering wheel. Where did I last save, anyway? It's been so long that I can't even remember. She reached into her backpack and retrieved her 3DS. The teal-colored portable had its share of dings and scratches, but it had always been there for her.

One bar of battery, and she had left her charger back at the dorm, but it at least started up, and she tapped on the Fire Emblem Fates icon. Instead of going to the title, though, the game popped up a portrait of Anna – winking and tapping her chin, as per usual – and a dialogue box. It had never done that before. The beige dialogue box read:

"Don't you think it's time you stopped worrying about things you can't control –" Tap. "– and started getting involved in something really important, for once?" Tap. "You've got so much potential. I've seen it when you've –" Tap. "– come to my shop so many times in the past. You know how to do this." Tap. "You might not think you've got anything to offer, but I know you do." Tap. "I'm only going to give you this choice once, Kiran." Tap.

A simple choice between two beige boxes. Yes or no. Kiran had no idea why her copy of Fates had decided to offer her a sequence that she had never seen before, but she had no reason not to see what secret she had unlocked. She tapped the yes box.

After that, the car sat empty, the engine still idling. The 3DS used up its last bar of battery and went dark. At the intersection nearby, the traffic light changed from red to green and back to red again, no cars waiting at the white lines to go past it.

And, in another world, Kiran emerged into the light to see a smiling Anna before her ....

END.
