The portal occupied the interior of a shrine that had been carved into the side of a single mountain rising from a sea of white that stretched for leagues in all directions. The entrance had been blocked by ice thick enough to seem like white stone, and Henry had been busy melting a path through it for the past hour, humming to himself as the red tome in his black-gloved hands spouted a controlled plume of flame.
"And –" A loud crack as the ice admitted defeat, bringing a hint of light from outside to the interior of the shrine. "– there it is, everybody. Heehee." He seated himself on a bench of white marble next to the entrance, using one of his long sleeves to mop up all the sweat that had been beading on his forehead. "And I am pooped. Call me again if you need me for another spell, but this looks like a good place to take a nap."
"Thank you, Henry," Florina said, looking up from the Pegasus she had been grooming. "You can stay here and listen for intruders." She turned to her partner. "Are you ready, Faye? This is the best chance you and I are going to have to scout the region."
"Scout?" Faye adjusted the hood of the heavy cloak she had been granted for the extreme cold before donning her mittens. "Aren't you from Ilia, Florina? I'm sure it hasn't changed all that much while you've been gone." She grumbled into her scarf. "Unless we're thousands of years in the past or something. That's happened to us before."
Florina shook her head, checking the barding on her Pegasus before mounting up. "Ilia doesn't change. That doesn't mean the Emblians aren't here. I'm sure this isn't the only portal. Now, come on up." Faye dutifully sat behind her, wrapping her arms around her middle. "It's a shame you weren't summoned with a Pegasus of your own. You told me you were learning how to ride, but –" She sighed. "No matter. Let's get going."
"I miss my Pegasus," Faye said, shivering as a breeze from outside touched her face. "But the Summoner brought me here with a bow and my nice dress, so that's that."
The two of them emerged from the shrine and immediately took to the sky, circling the mountain, the air crisp and cold around them as the Pegasus flapped his wings, his breath making small puffs of steam. Above them, through a wreath of clouds, the Sun seemed small and inconsequential despite being up at the peak of the sky.
"It's supposed to be the dead of night here," Faye said, her eyes scanning the endless white beneath them for signs of movement. "It sure doesn't look like it, though."
"This far north, the Sun can't set," Florina said. "We still call this Ilia, but it's actually outside our furthest border. Almost nothing can live here, not without magic or luck. It's almost the top of the world, but ... not really. Not quite. There's nothing to mark that spot, so we could very well fly past it and never be the wiser." She looked ahead at the horizon, flat and featureless in the distance. "It's too quiet here. Too much like death."
"But there could have been Ice Dragons here, once," Faye replied. "You told me that they used to live in Ilia, back before the, um, Scarring? Scouring? Is that it?"
"They did," Florina said, a note of sadness in her voice. "Maybe they're the ones who built the shrine? It does look a bit like the Dragon's Gate inside." She exhaled, her breath fogging the air in front of her face. "If you don't see anything, then we need to head back. I can't keep Huey up here too long. Pegasi can handle the cold, but this isn't normal cold." She looked over her shoulder. "Are you all right back there, Faye?"
"I am. It's just –" She closed her eyes. "– this is such a lonely place. If anything happened to us up here, if the Order of Heroes didn't know we were here, who'd even know that anybody had been here? It's ... just my fears trying to dig under my skin, that's all." In spite of that, she smiled. "Don't mind me, Florina. I'm babbling."
"It's all right," Florina replied, turning her Pegasus and heading back towards the mountain. "Talking helps make this place seem less empty. I don't blame you for wanting to fill the silence." A flap of wings as they began their approach. "We'll be all right. Henry's waiting for us, and so's the Order, right on the other side of the portal."
"Yeah." Faye gave Florina a good squeeze, her eyes still closed.
I wish you were here, Ninian, Florina thought, taking comfort in Faye being close at hand. You'd be able to tell us more about this place, and ... you'd just be here. She noticed Henry at the entrance to the shrine, waving up at them. But I'm not alone, and that's just going to have to do, isn't it? She took comfort from that thought, too.
END.
