"There," Loki said, looking down at Xander and nodding as she removed the bandages from his right arm. "As good as the day of your summoning." She narrowed her eyes, tapping the butt of her staff on the floor. "And are you going to thank me for this?"

"I question your motives," Xander replied, moving his arm in different ways to test his reflexes. "After all, I did assault your King, did I not? That is a capital offense."

Loki shrugged as the Prince regained his feet and strapped his black sword to his hip. "He decided to spare you. Bizarre as it might seem, he doesn't kill everyone." The hint of a smile at the corners of her mouth. "But he didn't say I had to heal you. That, I decided by myself. Is that the question buzzing inside that blonde head of yours?"

"The answer is obvious," Xander said, his face neutral. "Me being alive plays into your plans in one way or another. I can't thank you for a result you intended from the start."

Loki raised a brow. "Perhaps you're a little smarter than I first thought, Prince Xander?" She rested her free hand on her hip. "But you're still as transparent as a sheet of glass. Do you think I'm not aware of what you're plotting for your little Empress?" She leaned forward. "It's reckless. It's futile. And it depends on so many variables that no sane person would attempt it. Why, she's just as likely to kill you as any of our soldiers." A gleam in her eyes. "But you're hopelessly in love, aren't you? That's what's got you."

"She's alone in the world." Xander managed to keep himself composed, but a flare of emotion in his eyes betrayed him. "Am I supposed to abandon her here in this place, leave her to burn? I can't do that. I can't. And don't think you can tell me the why of it."

"She's not of your kingdom," Loki taunted. "She's not of your family. As you said, she's alone in the world. Why waste your compassion on someone like her, someone who can't even return a sliver of it?" Her smile had the edge of cruelty to it. "Do you think you can save her from the curse in her blood? Really? Is that how naïve you are?"

"I'll get her out of this place," Xander growled, "and away from Surtr. Away from you." His hand tightened on the hilt of the black sword. "Are you going to stop me?"

Loki stepped back from him, smirking, holding her staff behind her back. "Here's the fun part: No, I'm going to do that. I'm interested in seeing how far you get. If she stays, it's her fate to be sacrificed to the flames. You know that, I know that." She tilted her head. "I'll be asked to bring you back, of course, but you'll have a bit of a head start, if only for sport." Again, she narrowed her eyes. "Do you really think you can outsmart me?"

"I'm going to try." His eyes darkened. "Stand in my way, and I'll cut you down."

"Don't lose that spark," Loki replied, turning her back to him. "You'll have a chance to leave undetected just before sunrise. Take it. That's the best chance you'll have."

"Don't you dare lie to me any more than you already have, Loki," Xander warned.

Loki smiled over her shoulder, "Stay a step ahead of me, and you'll see any lies I tell long before they pass my lips. That's the best hint I can give you, Prince Xander."

Wait for me, Veronica, Xander thought as Loki departed, just a little while longer.

END.
