"This one is too old," Sasha said with a little sigh as she offered the book to Sage. "I can read about half of it, but..."
"Which one is it?" Sage questioned as he took it from her and looked at the cover and its faded gold script. "Ah. Yes, I can see why. It's in an older form of our language."
"How you learned to read and write?" Sasha guessed as Sage opened it up and started flipping through. She wasn't quite sure that would be right, but it might be close?
"Close, but I'm not quite that old," Sage said with a chuckle. "But I did learn to read it. I've read this one and can read it to you, if it's the lesson you'd like today."
"Please." She wasn't sure how long it took for a language to change, but it was still a bound book, which meant it was at least newer than some of the oldest documents housed in Sanctuary. Those, she'd been politely asked not to touch and honestly, Sasha didn't want to touch them anyway. Maybe someday, but not any time soon. For now she'd keep to things that didn't look like they might fall apart if she breathed on them and that she could hopefully read.
"It begins about a hundred years before I was born," Sage began and Sasha settled to listen. "The first chapter is called 'A Wanderer We Did Not Turn Away'..."
"Someone important?" Sasha questioned before frowning. She hadn't entirely meant to interrupt.
"You'll see." Sage smiled and went back to the text, tracing each line as he read it. They made it through the entire tale and into the next, finishing it far later than the usual time lessons ended.
Sasha had enjoyed every moment and Sage had gotten quite absorbed as well.
Just maybe she would see if she could find another book that looked to be about the same age. She'd found a part of the past that was certainly as interesting as the present.
And maybe she'd learn to read about it on her own someday, too.
