He was all alone.

His father had forced him to have the Tombkeepers' Initiation. The man had always been obsessed with it, of having an heir to carry on the great family tradition. Marik's fears of the pain, of what he had read about it causing people to go mad, had meant nothing to Mr. Ishtar. He had made his ten-year-old son lie prostrate on a slab while for hours his flesh was carved into with a hot knife. It had been Mr. Ishtar's greatest triumph . . . and Marik's greatest downfall.

Rishid hadn't saved him, either. Oh, Marik knew Rishid had tried, and of course Mr. Ishtar had refused, and abused Rishid for even thinking of taking Marik's place in the ceremony. But still, in some dark part of his heart, Marik was angry and felt betrayed by his older brother. He had just stood there, silent, as Marik was dragged away into a horror that would always live with him now.

Ishizu hadn't been any help. Not that Marik had really thought she had any hope of standing up to their father. The man didn't respect her much more than he did Rishid.

But still, no matter the reasons, right now Marik just felt thoroughly abandoned by everyone he loved. His entire world had caved in around him. All he wanted now was a protector, someone who really wouldn't abandon him no matter what. But there was no such thing, was there?

"Of course there is," a new voice whispered. A strange and deep voice. An unfamiliar voice, yet one that Marik instantly recognized and accepted. It was a being that he was creating from the feelings in his heart—but that was better than nothing.

"You'll protect me?" he said aloud.

"Any time you need it," the voice said softly.

That definitely sounded good to Marik.
