[16 January] It must symbolize something unseen
Title: When they play
Day/Theme: 16/ It must symbolise something unseen
Series: Goblin (Korean TV drama)
Character/Pairing: Kim Shin, Wang Yeo aka Lee Hyuk, Sunny aka Kim Sun
Rating: PG
Summary: In the future, Kim Shin plays baduk with his previous liege.
Kim Shin had learnt baduk from his father back in the days when he was still learning the art of war-making as a youth. There was not much else to do once they had set up camp, since his father had strict instructions from his mother not to expose him to the ribaldry of the common soldiers. There were his sword drills, and his studies, but it was considered the mark of the upper classes to play baduk, so Kim Shin played baduk.
Later, as his position grew, he had even played with the king twice. It was one of the marks of favour that incited jealousy and envy in court, and Kim Shin was a little proud at the special favour shown to him, and his loyalty to the king only grew.
He had never played baduk with Wang Yeo himself, of course.

Sunny was amused to find her goblin brother in their home once more, sitting opposite her husband with bowls of white and black stones, staring over a board. "Brother?" she said, standing before them.
"Sun-ah, you're back," Kim Shin remarked, his attention on the rows of stones.
Her own husband, fortunately, was more attentive. He leant up close and kissed her on the cheek. "How was work today?" he asked, trying not to show how much he wanted to go back to the game.
She snorted with amusement. "It was fine," she said, rubbing his shoulders briefly, and turned to her opponent. "Brother, why aren't you with my part-timer today?"
"She is with her study group today," Kim Shin said. "And you should stop calling her 'part-timer'. It's confusing for anyone else who hears you."
"Who else is going to hear?" she asked, then straightened. "Continue your game, I'm just going to go through my script for tomorrow."
The two men 'hummed' in reply, and even before Sunny had sat down, they were deep in their game again, the silence punctuated only by the sound of stones being set down.
Sunny had always thought that though her husband recalled his past life (as she did), his memories were not as strong. Maybe it was the effect of having been a Grim Reaper. Or perhaps there were so many regrets about that life that he did not care to remember them in detail. So she was a little surprised when she heard her husband say, "You should exercise further caution, General."
General?
"Sire, what caution should your servant exercise when victory is within reach?"
Sire? Your servant? Sunny's gaze flew to her brother, but his attention was wholly on the game. She covered her mouth, looking from one man to the other, not certain whether to laugh or to cry.
The click of stones continued for a while more, then her husband spoke, "General, surely you did not imagine we will fall for that?"
We? The imperial "we", Sunny identified. She watched, unwillingly mesmerised as the two seemingly reverted to their earliest roles. Who would have thought? In the Goryeo that had gone by, the two men had barely spoken - at least not after she had been married, and Wang Yeo deliberately ignored every petition from Kim Shin. To have them play baduk was unthinkable. And now -
Finally, the game ended, and Kim Shin smirked his annoying smirk, looked up and said, very deliberately. "Well played, Sire."
