[October 28th] [Original] Programs

Title: The Unbeatable Fortress
Day/Theme: October 28: Miss Machine
Series: Original (Diana and Belle #28)
Character/Pairing: Belle/Diana
Rating: PG-13
Author's Note: On a trendy space station

“Oh, here it is!” Diana said, pleased. She had almost forgotten where the Custom Magic Sundries booth was. That would be embarrassing, especially since she had told Belle so much about it. She stepped up into the attendant’s visual range.

“Welcome, Traveler. My name is Deborah. How may I help you?” the android asked. She had a pleasant, deep contralto that would send late 20th century science fiction authors drooling, and the figure of a hentai protagonist infected by a mechanizing nanovirus. Belle guessed that she was another example of the male-dominated space industry. A woman would have known that cutting down two bra sizes and tucking in the waist a bit would have create a sexier figure and leave enough extra material to make another unit every 10 units.

“I’d like to two mid-sized batteries, please,” Diana said, leaning over to watch her work. The android activated the program, and pulled up the stock design files.

“Would you like identical items?”

“Yes, please,” Diana replied, looking back at Belle, who was looking very shy.

“Please chose one of the following physical structures,” and Diana selected a small, smooth pebble, cream in color. The android selected it, and saved it to a new window.
Diana smiled as she watched the physical object created in the chamber beyond the input station.

“Would you like to add a signature mark?”

“Yes, I would.”

“What color and script, please?”

“RGB, R 225, G 102, B 107, and Altarian Modern Italic, please.”

“What would you like to input?”

“’Mine.’” Diana decided to check on her confused love:

“Belle, find anything you’d like?”

“Still looking,” Belle said, examining the posters of magical batteries, charms, and weapons, displayed like ice cream novelty ads at the doors of Florentine shops, all sumptuous colors and reasonable prices, convenient but not strictly necessary.

“The batteries are nice on the go,” Diana advised, watching the android work.

“Would you like to add a tag?”

“Oh, yes, one sec, have to find it,” Diana plunged her hand into the air next to her hip, and pulled out a small cube.

“Here it is.”

“Please insert the tag file into slot B,” the android said, gesturing to a small jack in the wall. Diana did so, very carefully. The tag file had cost a pretty penny, and she didn’t want to scratch it. There were not many craftsmen who could convert magical tags into code, and they charged accordingly.

The rest of the process didn’t take long, and soon Diana had two faintly glowing pebbles in her hand and a small dint in her discretionary funds. Belle had opted out of buying anything.

“So what do you think of the convenience of modern magical science?” Diana asked her, tossing her purchases up in the air and catching them neatly as they walked back towards the gate.

“I think you go there to check out Deborah’s silicite breasts,” Belle said with a smirk. Diana pretended to look hurt.

“What if I was just ogling the program? You have to admit it’s pretty hot stuff. Think of how much time you’d save on your alchemist circles if you could draft them on that…” Diana trailed off, as Belle looked thoroughly unconvinced.

“Oh, come on, what’s a look? You know what I really like. They’re right here,” Diana said, clearly indicating exactly where.

“Quit that! We’re in public!” And they continued their good-natured argument all the way back the ship.
