[Oct 28][FMA] Fuel

Title: Fuel
Theme: October 28 - Miss Machine
Series: FullMetal Alchemist
Character/Pairing: Ed/Winry
AN: This theme totally screams "Winry!".. the AU is..vague...i've got an entire backstory in my head with Roy as the high school principal (and the bane of Ed's delinquent existence) who insists on miniskirt uniforms for girls and Hawkeye as the vice-principal who's always there to give him a good smack upside the head, but alas, none of that made it into this little ficlet.

He really shouldn't be staring, but it was kind of hard not to when she was wearing those extra short cutoffs and leaning over like that under the open hood of his car. He wondered what she would do if he put his hands right there. Probably get annoyed at him for interrupting her intimate experience with the engine of his car. Sometimes he thought she might actually like him better if he were made of mechanical parts.

"You're leaking oil."

"Eh?" Was that her way of telling him he was losing it? Winry and her crazy grease monkey lingo.

"I think you've got a hole in your oil pump. I keep telling you to change your oil every month, but do you ever listen to me? Of course not! This is a classic piece of machinery and you're abusing it." From the way she was waving the dipstick around, he could tell she was getting riled up. Any second now, that vein would pop. "I never should have built it for you in the first place. At this rate, I'm gonna have to take apart the whole engine again!" Oh, hell no.

"No way, Winry. Last time you took an engine apart, we cracked the carburator and had to babysit every weekend for a month to buy a new one." Now he was starting to get riled up too. Then, predictably, she started laughing at him.

"Oh come on! Nina and Gracia both love you. And don't try to tell me you and Al didn't have fun playing horsey." She tossed him a wicked grin.

"Sure the kids are cute, but don't Dr. Tucker and Mr. Hughes freak you out even a little bit?" She laughed even harder at that.

"Oh Ed, what are we gonna do with you?" Her hand squeezed his shoulder affectionately and he forgot what he was annoyed about.

"Hey Winry, you know Al's graduating in a couple months."

"Oh really? I had no idea. I've just been working on his graduation present for no reason." He was trying to be serious here, dammit. He grabbed her hand and looked her square in the eyes.

"I wanna get outta here, Winry. I was thinking that after Al's done with school we'd just drive out of here. See where the road takes us, you know?" She frowned at him.

"You won't get very far." He felt his heart drop. Didn't she believe in him? "This car won't last another hundred miles at the rate you're at." Relief spread a lightness in his chest that made him chuckle. He took her other hand and pulled her toward him.

"I guess you'll just have to come along to keep us going."
