As if I didn't have enough horror material in my afterlife as it was, one night I was wandering around Justice trying to avoid Little Pinto as much as I could and I stumbled into a hotel room where a wandering fortune teller had been staying. Maybe it was because I was dead or because the fortune teller was actually genuine, but I walked into some kind of ripple in thin air.
As soon as I passed through, I wasn't in the hotel room any more. Instead I was back in a mortal existence again, laying on a couch with Chita bending over me.
I leaped up in shock. "What is this?!" I burst out. "What's going on?!"
"You were in a deeper sleep than I thought you were, Baby," Chita remarked.
I had never heard her call me that before. And actually, she was wearing clothes and a hairstyle that I'd never seen before. When I looked down at myself, so was I.
"Biff and Vince are gonna be back soon," she went on, following me and twirling the end of her boa. "They're bringing in the shipment from Canada."
"Well, that's . . . good," I stammered, still trying to figure out what was going on and why it was going on and whether I should try to make it stop. I didn't want to be back with Chita again, but I didn't wanna be dead again either.
Biff and Vince got back almost as soon as she spoke. "We got it, Boss," one of them exclaimed. "Premium moonshine."
I wanted to ask what the heck we were doing with moonshine, since we weren't backwoods hicks, but when I took a step forward, the scene changed again.
Now I was in some strange room that was mostly consoles and screens. It looked like the kind of technology people like Dr. Faustina were fiddling with, only not really; that was just all I knew to compare it to.
Chita was working at one of the consoles, turning dials and bringing up pictures on one of the screens. I could hardly believe what she was wearing. It was some kind of bizarre silver jumpsuit, the likes of which I'd sure never seen before. Nobody in our time wore stuff like that.
"Chita, what the heck are you wearing?" I asked.
She turned to look at me with a seductive smile. "Do you like it? I wanted to look my best for you, Captain. We've still got a long way to go before we reach Mars."
My jaw practically hit the floor. "Captain?! Mars?! What is this, some kind of pulp fiction dime novel come to life?! Mars . . . what the heck?! Nobody's been off this planet!"
Chita just smiled and got up, slinking over to me and putting her arms around my neck. "Of course not. We're the very first. Isn't it something, Captain? You and me, up in space." Then she was kissing me and somehow, during that, the scene changed again.
This time I was sitting at a desk in a big office. I turned the nameplate towards me and just stared in shock and disbelief.
Samuel Tolliver
Secret Service
What? Just what? Okay, the first other me had apparently been some kind of gangster, which wasn't too far removed from how my life had turned out, but this? I never wanted a career in law enforcement!
The door opened and Chita walked in. "You've got a new assignment, Snakes," she announced. "This is a big one." She tore off a piece of paper and handed it to me. "Lucrece Posey's put together a board of directors for her consolidate crime spree. You're going to Justice to break it up."
I leaped out of the chair. "Look, what's going on here?!" I yelped. "I was part of that board of directors! I'm dead because of it!"
She gave me a bored look. "None of your weird excuses today, Snakes. You've gotta get going."
"How do you even know about this meeting?" I demanded. "It's supposed to be secret!"
"We got a tip from somebody in the gang," Chita replied. "James West."
"Okay, now I know this is upsidedown and backwards!" I snapped. "West is the Secret Service agent! I'd never go in for that line of work! And why are you here? Why are you always here?! It's over between us! You're not supposed to be here!"
Chita gave me a cruel smirk and everything faded to black. I fell forward on my knees and found myself out of the ripple and on the floor of the hotel room again.
For a long time I just knelt there, trying to figure out what the heck had happened. Had I been to alternate worlds where me and Chita still met up? Was it all a bunch of hallucinations? (Could dead people hallucinate?) Was that fortune teller just playing sick games with me?
I had no idea, but I didn't want to stick around to find out. I got up and phased out that door before I could get pulled in by another ripple.
I still don't know what I experienced that night. And I'm just as content not to know. But the thought that Chita and I were destined to meet up no matter what paths our lives took is something that I don't know what to make of at all. I'd rather have never met her on the one hand because of what she turned out to be, and yet I'm glad I learned just how devious her kind really is. Knowing her sure shaped the rest of my existence and my world views.
