[June 11] [historical (WWI) rpf] What Fairy Tale was This?

Title: What Fairy Tale was This?
Day/Theme: June 11, 2016 - "and then I fell asleep in a strange field"
Series: historical fiction/WWI rpf
Character/Pairing: Wilfred Owen/Siegfried Sassoon
Rating: G
Also: I was thinking about this fic about about these two I received for Yuletide.

An unknown field in Scotland was infinitely more quiet than an unknown field on the continent, almost, by that comparison, to the point of oppressiveness. And space stretched out forever on nights unclouded by smoke and flares. The stars were unaccountably bright against the lacquer-black sky. There was almost more space in one's mind than one knew what to do with after the experience of so much time stifled by the noise and danger of the front. ...And tonight, that vast, openness spread over not just Wilfred, but Sassoon on his greatcoat beside him... Sassoon- the man himself better and more beautiful than any dream of him had been.

(Wilfred understood that there could be wisdom in that advice not to meet one's heroes, but in this case, what a dear prize had been won through having the courage to speak to the man he so admired when the chance had opened up before him)

And in the freedom of the cover of that calm darkness, another burst of bravery inspired him to deliver a kiss that was not rebuffed, but returned by another (better, surer, bolder).

What fairy tale was this? Where he, Wilfred Edward Owen (no one!), would drift to sleep, cushioned by the grass of some strange field? What was life, that it could be so terrible and so amazing? The stars shone on, a distant canopy, and Sassoon's breath waned gently into sleep.
