[June 5] [Pacific Rim] Jury-Rigged

Title: Jury-Rigged
Day/Theme: 5 - make and mend
Series: Pacific Rim
Character/Pairing: Newt, Hermann
Rating: G

Machines don’t heal on their own and people can’t just be rebuilt.

So, what was it exactly they were trying to do here? They slapped whatever part of the damaged jaeger could be reached and said something about the ‘old girl’ being all right as if it wouldn’t take a team of over fifty people working around the clock to make that happen. When it was a pilot damaged, the slap came back, usually on the shoulder if it wasn’t the injured part. They were told they’d be patched up in no time, as if a patch was all they would need.

Maybe it spared them from thinking of the pilots as scared, hurt people. No one wanted a hero who had nightmares and sweats or hissed with pain trying to button a shirt. No one wanted to imagine that the jaegers, for all their power and complexity, were just made of metal and wires. Like a toaster. And everybody knew how reliable they were, Newt thought as the smell of something burnt wafted from the cafeteria.

He had made a special trip back to get some caffeine and some pain medication for his lab partner. He had seen the white knuckles and the mouth pulled tight and knew what that meant.

With the world ending, there wasn’t time for physical therapy or specialists or acupuncture. They gave Hermann a cane and a mitoxantrone prescription and expected him to plug along like one of the machines he designed. And he tried. He would probably die trying. They all would.

“How are we supposed to armor against acid?” Some of the repair crew were bickering as Newt went by.

“Baking soda,” he said before he could stop himself. They glared at him. “Calcium bicarbonate. Use their bone meal against them. Whatever.”

That actually wasn’t a bad idea, he realized as he got in the elevator to head back to the labs. He would have to tell Hermann. Maybe they could use it.
