[October 19th] [Original] Scattered Pieces

Title: Scattered Pieces
Day/Theme: October 19: Birds in your garden
Series: Original (Diana and Belle #19)
Character/Pairing: Jonathan/Evan
Rating: PG-13
Author's Note: In a timeline in which Jonathan is more brave than usual

Evan was watching the birds. Jonathan smiled as he slipped in the garden to watch. Of course Evan noticed his presence, but he kept the pretense that Jonathan could move about unseen.

Evan had reminded him a shy little songbird when he had first meet him, pale, thin and light, with wings that seemed too large for his small frame and voice high and light, barely breaking. Now if he was a bird, he was a hawk, an eagle, a griffin, something large and strong and almost cruel. Jonathan shivered a little in the chill morning air.

An explosion from the laboratory broke through the tranquil scene, followed by some of Diana’s highly colorful curses. The birds scattered and fled and Evan sadly watched them go. He turned to Jonathan, gray eyes (they were all the way gray) troubled.

“If I broke into pieces, would you pick them all up?” Evan wasn’t meeting his eyes, so he knew it wasn’t an idle question.

And it wasn’t. Jonathan touched his collarbone, still vaguely surprised to find it unbroken. In the grip of a nightmare, Evan had tried to break his heart last night, quite literally so. He had almost ripped it out of his chest before he came back to himself. It was all healed now, but they had spent the rest of the night huddled together between Belle and Diana, unable to sleep. His body still remembered the shock and horror of his heart beating in the cold air, blood everywhere, he had thought he was drowned in blood.

Did he really want to go through that again? But he loved Evan, more than anything, even when he did not understand. So he called upon his bravado and answered:

“I need some spice in my life. I would put back all the pieces. If you want help with editing, you could let me know after you’re all together again.”

And all of Evan watched him, and accepted his answer in peace.
