As Kyon walked towards the SOS Brigade club-room, he smelled a noxious odor. Is that a chemical spill? he thought, Or maybe the Chemistry Club had a horrific accident.
He entered the club-room, and to his horror, saw that Haruhi had left her wet sneakers on top of the running electric heater. He ran into the room and knocked them away from the heater.
"HEY!!" said Haruhi. "I was drying those out! Do you want me to walk home in wet sneakers?"
"No," Kyon said, "but I also don't want you to 'gas' everybody and then burn down the school."
