Todai was a big place, (obviously), and filled with a shit ton of people. It was hard to find a quite place, away from the crush of people and noise. It took a few weeks before Shin found the perfect spot. It wasn't much of a spot: just a patch of grass with two trees too young to have much foliage. Still, the grass was thick enough to keep him from the dirt and there was enough leaves on the branches to offer some shade.
Shin liked to lie on the grass and close his eyes. His mind would still, his thoughts would slow down; become a clam stream rather than a raging river on the brink of drowning him. Shin didn't always havethe opportunity to visit this spot, but when he did, then he tried to take full advantage of the simple peace it offered him.
“So this is where you sneak away to.”
Shin didn't open his eyes. “Seriously, you have got to quick stalking me. It's not a healthy hobby.”
“Oh, don't flatter yourself. I was just visiting a friend. He owes me a favor.”
Shin opened his eyes. He squinted up at Uesugi. “Then he's not really a friend. Or you're not much of one.”
Uesugi shrugged and looked up at the building. “Acquaintance, then, if that makes you happy.”
Shin rubbed his eyes. “It would make me happy if you quit popping out of nowhere and bothering me.”
Uesugi eyed him with mild distaste. “You're going to get grass stains on your clothes and all kinds of vermin crawling all over you.”
“Not much of a nature person, are you,” Shin said. He sat up with a low groan. He ruffled his hair to shake any pieces of grass or curious ant. He stopped and then blinked up at Uesugi. “Wait, if I get ants in my pants, then does that mean you'll keep away?”
Uesugi looked unimpressed. “You're such a child.”
Shin laughed as Uesugi walked away.
