[June 17] [THG] What About Finnick?

Title: What About Finnick?
Day/Theme: June 17, 2015 "She found a boy she knew she’d change."
Series: Hunger Games series
Character/Pairing: Annie, Finnick, D4 OCs
Rating: PG
Author's comment: In continuity with my other things on this topic- how Finnick became Annie's mentor.

Annie stepped onto the train after Chasen and stopped just short of fully thinking something about Grandma Ty, who she remembered only vaguely with a superstition for always waving when she saw a train pass by, because Mr. Armain was standing in the car in question, looking at Theo and Finnick, who appeared to be already kicking back, on a couch with their feet up.

Victors who weren't mentoring were often invited to the Capitol during the Games for one reason or another, of course. Additional victors from Four frequently accompanied the official mentors for moral support; younger victors went to learn the ropes from the older ones. …Somehow it had never occurred to Annie that if she were to find herself in this place she would see them though. It was rude to stare, but for all that she had passed through her teenage years up to now with Finnick Odair a constant presence on television, she had rarely seen him in person. He looked younger up close.

"Hi Annie," Theo said, casual, for all that it sounded bittersweet. "…Hi Chasen," he added, so as not to single her out.

"So," Mr. Armain turned around, "Chasen, you're with Mags, and, Annie, I suppose it will be you and me-"

And that was when she blurted it out- "What about Finnick?"

The train car full of men went still, rendered, to varying degrees, surprised or thoughtful.

"I was just thinking," Annie went on, "Finnick hasn't mentored yet. I don't know if there's a reason."

Finnick rose and Annie was struck by a sudden concern that she might have said something wrong- or not just wrong, but offensive or upsetting. "I-" Finnick said, "If I'm who you want, I'll do it. I'll be your mentor, Annie Cresta."

"Wait'll Mags hears this," Theo piped up. Odysseus gaped, uncertain over this turn of events, but not of the mind to burst out in criticism of either Annie or Finnick's decision. Chasen looked around from one victor to another, gauging their expressions.

"'Til Mags hears what?" Terpsicore announced her arrival, having signed off on a last bit of digitized paperwork confirming the officially chosen tributes were safely secured on the train.

"Finnick is going to mentor Annie," Chasen explained.

"Oh," Terpsicore clapped her hands together, sending all the dangling bits of light cloth up and down her arms fluttering like feathers in the wind, "How delightful! Finnick, your very first time mentoring!"

"First time mentors don't bring home tributes though," Finnick whispered. He was looking Annie right in the eye. She wasn't sure whether anyone here but her could even hear him. "…Unless they're Brutus," he added. …Despite the odds, there weren't many things in the Games that had never been done.

"It will be interesting," Annie replied.

That part, perhaps, was what left Finnick riveted. "Yes," he agreed. It might be fast or slow, an ordinary or horrific end, but whatever else the experience was, mentoring this girl would be interesting.
