[May 8] [Strange Magic] Must Be Nice
Title: Must Be Nice
Day/Theme: 8. There are people who have the capacity to love without living in terror of loss
Series: Strange Magic
Character/Pairing: Marianne/Bog King, Sunny/Dawn
Rating: G
It must be nice, Marianne found herself thinking, to have love with no worries at all. She was watching her sister cavort with Sunny through the lilac bush. Even without wings, Sunny had no trouble keeping up with Dawn. He hopped from branch to branch, shaking the leaves and blossoms as the two giggled and chased each other. It was adorable and smelled lovely too. Marianne didn’t have a lot of patience with adorable most of the time, but it was nice to see Dawn happy and with someone as committed to her happiness as Marianne herself was.
She felt Bog shift behind her and raised her elbows so he could settle in a little better. They were safe in the shade of an alder tree branch, back under the leaves. Bog leaned against the trunk and Marianne leaned against him and they both watched over the little meadow at the edge of the Forest. He had been quiet for most of their stay. They weren’t making cutesy idiots of themselves with the chasing and the giggling. Theirs was more playful sparring matches and affectionate insults. They usually saved that for after dark in the Forest, but this was nice anyway, which made Marianne reconsider her previous thought.
It was nice to have someone she trusted, that she could lean on, in both senses of the word. She did love Bog, and she honestly didn’t have any worries about him. She had seen him at his snarling, suspicious, kidnapping, skull-bashing worst already. Whatever they fought about in the future, it wasn’t likely to rival that. It was a pleasant realization to have. She hadn’t even been jealous of her sister when she had first thought it, just happy for her. Dawn had real love for the first time ever, and strangely enough, so did Marianne.
If anything, Marianne was just glad that Dawn’s glee at her new romance didn’t have to be realized through the pain of betrayal. Sunny had never had eyes for anyone else and would rather cut off his arm than hurt her. Dawn’s heart was safe with him. Marianne had come through to this happiness the hard way and was finding it more and more difficult to be angry about it. Without being cheated on and used and lied to, she wouldn’t know how rare and wonderful this really was. As giddy as Dawn and Sunny were, Marianne wasn’t sure they really knew how lucky they were. She knew it all too well.
