[May 1] [Watchmen] Not Pretending

Title: Not Pretending
Day/Theme: a place of cold fire and pain and remembrance, a place where one’s name and deeds were never forgotten
Series: Watchmen
Character/Pairing: Rorschach
Rating: PG

Refusing to be weakened by the biting cold was not the same thing as pretending he didn’t feel it. He didn’t pretend anything. He certainly wasn’t going to pretend to go along with this. Any of it. Not for personal safety. Not even for a ride home. He remembered marching back out into the howling wind and snow. He remembered the moment he had completely understood what was going to happen when Jon stopped him, the resignation that for the first time might have been acceptance.

He wasn’t going home. He didn’t have a home to go to. Everyone knew who he was. He was prepared to go on fighting, but nothing would be the same. With so many dead and so much destroyed, he might have been able to be forgotten long enough to get back to work with a vengeance, but no. It was going to end here. Jon would kill him and then leave without knowing or caring what happened to the world left behind.

The thought sparked in Rorschach’s head as he watched the blue fingers rise. Jon didn’t know. He didn’t about the journal, about this future, anything. Neither did Veidt. The truth was still in the world. It would make it to the surface somehow, make itself known. It was going to be seen and remembered. This wasn’t over.

The cold and the horror should have numbed him past any new pain, but being taken apart burned in every cell. Someone might have been screaming somewhere, but it wasn’t him.
