[Original] Stardust

Title: Stardust
Day/Theme: October 12: Into the valley of dying stars
Series: Original; Title Pending
Character/Pairing: Original; January "Jan" Rose
Rating: PG (?)

Jan stares out the train window as she and the rest of her battalion are sent to White Gates, the last stop and last military base; tomorrow, she will be sent to fight in the civil war. Outside, fields of grass, wheat, and flowers rush by, all waiting to be cut or harvested. Inside the train men and woman are quiet and tense, not speaking; some write letters to love ones while others listen to contraband music players. In the back a group play a game of poker, the last game they will get to play for several months, for gambling is illegal in the war zone. In the pot are IOUs, to be won and guarded until they could go home, hopefully alive.

Jan has nothing of her past. Her hair, once long and candy floss pink, is cut short and platinum blonde again. Her face is not made up with harsh eyeliners, dark eye shadows, and vibrant lip gloss; none of that is allowed when fighting a war. Her throwing knives and cosh are sitting in a hidden space in her superior's desk; she feels vulnerable and naked without them, despite the "selective-fire" gun she now has.

She keeps a few things of her gang days. Hidden in her boot, though against regulation, is a dagger, long, strong, and deadly. And tattooed on her hip is We too are stardust. Her favorite line of her favorite book (which is the only personal belong she is allowed to have).

Today, however, she tries not to think of it. If it is true, then stars are dying and soon she will be bringing about their death.
