Author's comment: It's my birthday! And since my nickname 'Suzume' means 'sparrow,' really, how could I pass up this prompt on this day? ^_^

"My sister, Yun, could speak to animals," Yumi reminisced.

"Oh, I've heard of that," Aila nodded, "From my grandmother. There have been members of our tribe who could do that without being full-fledged shamans. They just had the right inclinations- they were closer to the earth, I suppose. ...As far as I know, we don't have anyone left like that now, but they're born that way, not made, so as long as the Karaya survive..."

"I am certain that things will turn around for the Karaya."

"Well, for all that tensions remain with Zexen and obviously Harmonia, the clans are more closely united now than they've been in decades," Aila said after some consideration, "With everyone's support I have faith enough."

"You know, you seem to be very close to the spirits yourself, Aila." That was part of what had brought her to Alma Kinan in the first place. During their shared time at Budehuc Castle, the subject of Aila's innate abilities of a more mystical nature had come up in the course of casual conversation and Yuiri had mused on how, before the closing of the village to protect the seal, a girl such as Aila from one of the other clans might have been brought to Alma Kinan to be fostered for a time and develop her talents. "I'm surprised you can't converse with animals yourself."

"I guess it just isn't one of my abilities."

"Everyone has their own strengths." Yumi smiled. "You have lots of talents that extend to other spheres than that of the spirits. It's easy to tell."

"H-huh," Aila blushed a bit and tried to steer the subject away from herself, "Y-your sister. Yun. Even among those who speak with the spirits, she was specially chosen, wasn't she?"

"Yes, Yun was a rare one even here!" Yumi laughed, "She could even talk to plants!"

"Plants?" For all that they were alive and certainly imbued with that life by the spirits the same as humans and animals, Aila's mind boggled.
