[Dec. 28] [THG] Speak and Remember

Title: Speak and Remember
Day/Theme: Dec. 28, 2014 "Hard times befallen the sole survivors"
Series: Hunger Games trilogy
Character/Pairing: Haymitch & Katniss
Rating: PG, end of series spoilers

For all that Snow had done to try and screw it up, Haymitch noted, Katniss and Peeta still had something that no other victor had. No two experiences of any event could be completely the same, but they weren't sole survivors. The closest the rest of them could get were the other victors- Katniss and Peeta had come out of the same Games. How many other victors would've done anything they could to be granted that? (maybe they would've or maybe not, but Haymitch thought of Maysilee…)

"Haymitch," Katniss asked him- it had taken her a while to work up to inquiring about this (it was going to take longer still to ask him about the tributes he had mentored), "I've been working on the book again. Is there anything you want to say- about Chaff? About Finnick? Any of the victors?"

"Sure…" he considered it slowly, "There's lots of stuff. I guess I better say it while I can. While I'm here to remember."

"There's no- there's no rush." Katniss frowned, "Haymitch, you're not going away anytime soon, I hope. Nothing's going to happen to you that makes you think you have to rush."

"No, not that I'm planning on, sweetheart," he tossed one hand flippantly into the air, attempting to wave away her concerns, "It's just with so many of them gone- and they were strong people, survivors- and how close things came with you… You never know when your life's going to end. Suddenly. Miserably."

Katniss tensed up, far from at ease with this line of thinking. "Haymitch, let's not talk like that. It's true, but let's not."

"Sorry." It wasn't easy for any of them to recover.
