[Dec. 25] [Boardwalk Empire] Out of the Rain

Title: Out of the Rain
Day/Theme: Dec. 25, 2014 "I'll just hope for rain"
Series: Boardwalk Empire
Character/Pairing: Charlie & Meyer, Benny, A.R.
Rating: G
Author's comment: Written with seasons 1-4 in mind.

It rains in New York and Meyer holds the umbrella over A.R. Charlie, mainly, just gets wet.

It rains again in New York and Charlie struggles to open the umbrella. Unlike A.R.'s it's some cheap piece of shit and it shows. Meyer takes the delay with outward good nature, his hands tucked into the pockets of his coat. The umbrella snaps up and into position as it should and now all's right as it should be. Charlie holds the umbrella for the two of them. It's more convenient that way. He's taller.

Benny doesn't bother with umbrellas anyway. Weird kid probably doesn't even notice he's getting wet until he's completely soaked through. But, hey, fine, what does Charlie care? That's not his problem (Benny came along with Meyer, Meyer shoulders a lot of the Benny stuff). It's better this way anyway unless someone brings along another umbrella. Three people don't fit very well under just one.

They're walking down the street, water splashing a bit under their heels, and Charlie's hoping it's not going to stain his slacks, but if you have to go out in this weather and still need to look good there's not too much to be done about it. And A.R. taught him the importance of this in life in general (in their line of work). And Charlie's found he likes to look good.
Meyer looks good too.

He notices Charlie looking at him like that and smiles a little in return.

It rains in Tampa and Charlie hasn't thought to bring an umbrella. What, was he supposed to check the weather forecast before coming down here? This is his first time in the state. He had assumed that since this partnership with Nucky was Meyer's thing that Meyer would've looked into and let him know about anything he found significant. Apparently rain didn't qualify was significant.

And now he's standing on the threshold of this door, looking out at not just the rain here, but the crazy way the wind whips it around to strike from unsuspected angles and the dull murmur of thunder in the distance trying to decide how he should handle this- how best to preserve his dignity in this situation.

From behind him comes the sound of an umbrella opening.

It's Meyer who's holding it. "I don't know how this will hold up against that wind," he hedges his bets, "But I'm willing to head out now and go for it."

Charlie falls into step with him. Meyer holds the umbrella up and a bit out like a shield before them. Bracing themselves, they exit into the humid tempest.

"If this is just an ordinary storm, imagine their hurricanes…!" Charlie says.

He admires the way Meyer handles the umbrella on their shared behalf. It doesn't bend back. He keeps going forward.

It rains in New York and all Charlie asked was for Benny to hold the umbrella for a minute- just a minute!- while he got something out of his pocket, but Benny's just too damn excitable and all it takes is one stupid thing capturing his attention and he's completely forgotten the task at hand, dropping his umbrella and running off like a shot after who the hell knows what.

The umbrella is lying at an angle in the gutter as the rain keeps coming down and falls into it, against it, the material stained darker than just from wetness as it comes in contact with whatever filth is being washed down into the street. Charlie sighs. What a pain.

And just as he's about to look away from the thing and just hurry up and finish what he's doing, a hand reaches into sight and grasps the thick part of the handle.

Meyer lifts the umbrella from the street and shakes it, dismissing the majority of the blackest drops. He rights the item then and gives the inside a cursory wipe with a handkerchief to try and avoid having water drop out of the window onto them and nullify most of the advantages of having the umbrella in the first place. He closes the gap between them with a single step and holds the umbrella, between the two of them, more over Charlie.

That's what they do. They help one another stay out of the rain. They're partners after all.
