Title: Never Knew When to Turn and Run

Sometimes Jimmy thought he never should have come back to Atlantic City. He should have packed off for California with Pearl when he had the chance. She would have liked California, he was sure of it. Pearl had been hopeful and open-minded. With that kind of temperament, she could have made orange juice out of whatever oranges California gave her. Jimmy still had the picture she'd drawn on, expressing her feelings about the two of them.
If a girl could be a whore and be that optimistic, she could make it more or less anywhere. Who knew? Maybe she could have been a movie star. She'd been pretty and she'd had drive. Jimmy didn't know enough to say what would get you where you wanted to go in Hollywood.
But he hadn't left. He had stayed and gotten involved in things, further and deeper. Nucky's business; Al's business. He'd stood his ground, and maybe he could've expected something to happen to him, but he could've taken it. Pearl had been the one destroyed instead.
Just, the last time he'd run, it'd been straight into the arms of the Kaiser. Maybe it stood to reason that such a terrible experience might incline him to think that running was a poor answer. Kids weren't supposed to be raised to think that running was a good answer. But kids thought there had to be a right choice to be made. Jimmy was a man and he knew that sometimes there wasn't a right choice or a perfect solution to life's problems. Sometimes all you could do was try and not to make the worst choice. Running might not have been the worst choice.
