[Sept. 16] [THG] Before You Rise

Title: Before You Rise
Day/Theme: Sept. 16, 2014 "passiontide"
Series: Hunger Games trilogy
Character/Pairing: Mags & her father
Rating: PG
Author's comment: back to just 'sketching' at ideas for me...

They had been sitting on the porch, talking. Just idle conversation about goings-on around town- how Tyde's kids were doing, whether there was anything really going on with Shad and that Ripple girl from the cannery, how the kids from the Club were feeling as the Games season drew nearer- that kind of thing.

It happened suddenly.

Her father died and Mags found herself, once she had sent sympathetic students and neighbors home, in a silent house. It wasn't as if were all that unusual for her to be left with her own thoughts and the body of a person she had loved dearly. Mr. Gaudet's still form was covered by a sheet. Padre Danio would come by tomorrow and they'd arrange for the burial.

One of those old expressions came to mind. 'The other side of the veil.' There were many people already gone that her father would be happy to see again. Her mother, old friends lost in the war, tributes he had known and liked.

The cycle of the numinous year was headed around toward its holiest day.

And, this time, just like every other time, no one would rise. They could recollect the one such miracle the world had ever received, but Papa would stay dead, thirty-odd years of tributes would stay dead, and Panem would lie back and take it. Panem would not rise. It took her mind up to the edges of despair (and, again, treason- faith and treason always seemed to advance hand in hand).

She needed what she always advised: patience.

They would rise on the last day. If many people thought and worked in near-silence, the day to rebel would also come.
