It was a very long time ago now that he had accepted the rune. He doubted anyone but historians spoke the name of his homeland anymore. He had outlived (outlasted) two other men who had borne their runes not from the same moment, but alongside him. He had seen their successors now- warriors grown and warriors growing, but both like children compared to his experience. Geddoe could remember when Wyatt had been like that- when Ari had-
No, he had to put those thoughts to rest- the ghosts they would resurrect, the regrets from his first time as a Firebringer and all the things he would've done differently if he could've were too much. They would cloak him in melancholy all over again, when he wanted to try and live in a roughly neutral way, working for the empire that had destroyed his homeland and not thinking too hard about it because it allowed him the freedom to move back and forth across the borders that he needed.
And when he looked forward, he would try not to only anticipate the bad.
