Midnight Ride
“TODAY! TODAY I SHALL SOAR AS FREE AND BOLD AS THE EAGLE! THE WIND SHALL BE DIVIDED BY MY FURIOUS AND PASSIONATE FLIGHT OF YOUTH!”

“Lee?”

“Yes Tenten!”

“Give it a rest.”

Lee blinked and faltered, not having expected his speech to receive such a monotonous response. “But…Tenten! The sky calls to us! Can you not hear it?!”

“Right now, all I hear is the engine going Sput-sput-sputter-sput-die.” She reached further down into the front of the machine. “We’re not going anywhere today except maybe the shop to look for some new pistons.”

“But we must fly today! And every day!”

Tenten sighed and pulled herself out to stare her companion right in the eye. “Lee, first of all, the engine isn’t working. Even if we wanted to, we couldn’t get this thing up into the air as is. Secondly, the shop is across town. By the time we get there and if we find the parts we like and can afford, then by the time we get back we won’t have it fixed until tomorrow.”

“That’s only if we sleep!”

Thirdly,” she continued, ignoring his gusto, “you, well… Lee… I really prefer you not piloting our plane.”

“What?! Why not?!”

“Well… we only have one plane, can’t possibly afford to buy or build another one, and…”

“But I’m good at flying!”

“Yes. You’re very good at flying. But your landings…”

“I only just grazed that haystack!”

“It was a chicken coop and you plowed it over. Twice.”

“But no chickens were ever hurt,” he pointed out happily.

“As unlikely as that is, that’s true. But we’re even luckier that is wasn’t something sturdier, Lee. Something that could have taken out our plane and us with it.” She looked apologetic. “I’m sorry, but it’s just for the best that I stay the pilot.”

He deflated in disappointment, but if there was anything she knew well about her flying partner, it was that Rock Lee never stayed down long—and that could be taken figuratively and literally.

“Then we must still fix the plane today!” he declared, hands fisted in determination. “Quickly, Tenten! To the shop!”

She sighed and went to argue, but when the fires got lit in Lee’s eyes, no objection could stop him. “Alright, fine. It’ll be better to get the parts today anyway so we can have it done by tomorrow.”

“No! We shall have The Blooming Lotus in the air by tonight!” he vowed. “Or I will clean the engine fifty times!”

Tenten rolled her eyes. “Whatever. Let’s go.”

~~~~~
Later that night, someone shook her awake.
“Nnn, wha? Lee?”
“Quick Tenten, we must fly!”
She looked blearily for her alarm clock. “What time is it?”
“A quarter until midnight.”
The distant hum of an engine chased away the last bits of sleep and she sat up in bed, looking out towards her window. “Is that…?”
“The heavens await us!”
“You fixed it?!”
“Yes, and we must fly it!”
As amazed as she was, Tenten groaned. “Lee, it’s late. We’ll fly it tomorrow, first thing.”
“But I haven’t flown at all today!” he protested frantically.
“You make me fly you every day, Lee.”
“But—-!”
“One day without it won’t kill you.”
“But—-!”
“I’m tired and I just want to go to sl—-”
“But Tenten, I promised him!”
There fell a silence between them where only the patient roar of The Blooming Lotus could be heard. Tenten didn’t know who Lee had made a promise with, but the desperation in his eyes to keep it was something that moved her. She had made a promise to someone herself once, and she could swear her soul became that passionate when she made it. It still did.
“…Alright. Let me get dressed first.”
“There’s no time! It’s almost midnight!”
“Well surely you can’t expect me to go flying in nothing but my nightgown, can you?!”
There was another silence.
Two minutes before midnight, Tenten found herself sailing through the clouds and moonlight in nothing but her gown, goggles, and a pair of boots. She was tired, underdressed, and consequently freezing her unmentionables off.
“JUST YOU WAIT GREEN BEAST!” Lee was hollering to the moon. “I’LL MEET YOU HERE YET!”
She never regretted it for a minute.
Authoress Notes
How could I resist for even a second calling the plane Lee was associated with "The Blooming Lotus"? I simply couldn't. =D
Goodness, writing this drabble has just proven to me that I'm going to love writing the Tenten & Lee team. (The chicken coop bit might just have become my favorite thing about this AU so far.) I've got to give them more parts now. Theirs is a newfound friendship I'll adore forming. Neji has his own "association" with these two still, but that's for another time/drabble. As is Lee's promise to the Green Beast. (Three guesses as to who that is, and the first two don't count. =P)
