One wanted to appear interesting, but not too interesting- not so much as to seem too good for them and therefore unapproachable or to pass the boundary of the interesting into the strange or concerning. There was an art to this (there was an art to all things worth doing).
There was a particular way he entered the establishment. The correct walk he had trained himself into maintaining ordinarily under most situations. He managed the look on his face. He looked around with a welcoming sort of calm.
He caught the waitress' eye.
The way she smiled, he knew he'd done his job.
