[Jan. 15] [BoFIV] Word on the Wind
Title: Word on the Wind
Day/Theme: Jan. 15, 2014 "Are you going brother?"
Series: Breath of Fire IV
Character/Pairing: Scias
Rating: PG
"Got word that the war's going to start up again," says one of the men at the bar up front and Scias' ears perk up- well, not really, they're not the sort of ears to stand to attention, but his attention focuses toward the conversation to a little ways before him and to the right.
"Oh, yeah right Goff, you're always mouthing off and saying stuff like that," the bartender spoke up, entering the conversation, "Where'd you hear it from this time? Your old granny? Some traveling merchant none of us have ever laid eyes on and never will?"
"From Igor!" the first man- Goff- argued back, "Igor's got an in with the prince you know and he says they've got a man in the tower who's stirred up things bad enough with the imperials that there's gonna be a war tribunal on in a day or two."
The man Goff had been addressing his remarks to inclined his head thoughtfully. "Don't know who they could have who's worth holding a tribunal over, but if that's so, you're probably on the mark about it blasting the ceasefire into so many little bits. The Imperials aren't hardly going to accept any justice from the Alliance- not anything reasonable anyway. It'll just be an excuse for them to demand all sort of ridiculous things. Wouldn't even matter if they hung the man."
"I don't know," the bartender remained skeptical, "Since when is Igor talking to you, Goff?"
"Not talking to," Goff corrected sternly, "Talking around."
Igor was a good source though. Scias had worked for him before- he was one of the few folks hiring in times of peace- and he'd do it again if he had to. He couldn't say he cared much for Igor, but a boss was a boss. He didn't have to like anyone who employed him.
And if the war began again, there would be plenty more opportunities for a mercenary like him to find work with employers more savory than Igor. The Alliance army was depleted by many years of warring. Soon enough, Scias expected, those looking for that sort of job would be applying directly with the prince.
War was his business. He couldn't complain.
