December Themes

Here are the themes for December 2013:

  1. On days like these, there are always rainbows.

  2. Don't cry. Tears won't help.

  3. The snow is warm. The ice is hot.

  4. They call you heroes but you died like dogs.

  5. You can buy a peach. But where can you buy an orchard in full bloom?

  6. However, returning to the world like this proves nothing.

  7. I work. I slave. I drive myself like a locomotive.

  8. Waiting to die isn't living.

  9. Do you want to become a demon too?

  10. People get too used to inconvenience.

  11. Get your epitaph right

  12. A side parade, with a single balloon

  13. Sometimes they are, and sometimes they aren't.

  14. Empty your heart of its mortal dream.

  15. I savor bitterness--it is born of experience.

  16. A body needs a good memento mori to flush out the humors.

  17. You must have room to fear new things. I shall make you all new, my own revolution, neither red nor white, but black.

  18. It is not about wanting or not wanting. It is about the will in your jaw, and the egg on your back.

  19. We obsess. It's our nature.

  20. You have already done all of this and will do it again. I am only here to make sure it happens.

  21. Like a passion play. Like a sacrifice.

  22. Hide inside me, as you did before.

  23. I look at you and it is like my throat being cut.

  24. The trouble with prophecy is that it is alive.

  25. A revelation is always the end of something.

  26. In the space of one heartbeat to another I loved you and I was lost to you

  27. But you know, in the end, you can only be yourself in a basement, in the black, underneath everything, where no one can find you.

  28. I don't want to think -- so long as I don't think or feel, I will be fine and everything will return to normal.

  29. We didn’t say anything, because there was such an awful lot to say, and no language to say it in.

  30. Nothing when you want something. Something, when you thought there was nothing.

  31. Secrets that have been forgotten. Secrets that were never known. Secrets that did not exist at all.

Notes:

  • 1-10 are from the 1990 movie, Akira Kurosawa's Dreams. It's a collection of eight beautiful short stories.

  • 11-12 are from two songs from Snow Patrol. The themes would have been some choice lines from Snow Patrol but then I changed my mind as the year progressed.

  • 13 is a nod to Madeleine L'Engle. I can never pronounce her name right.

  • 14 is from a poem about the Sidhe. I found myself wanting to read about them after looking up pronunciations of Irish names.

  • 15-27 are from Deathless by Catherynne M. Valente. Such delightful prose in this book.

  • 28 is from Tabitha Suzuma's Forbidden. Angst for the angst-addicted.

  • 29 is a quote from William Saroyan. I saw this on tumblr and it was so salient to me.

  • 30-31 are from the strange Welcome To Night Vale podcasts.
