Both Ginger and Lou hated nightmares. And they hated even more that because of the extensive and numerous horrors they had come through, they experienced nightmares quite frequently.

It was just one more of many when Lou started awake one night, clutching the pillow and breathing heavily. He slumped back, staring up at the ceiling. Groaning, he passed a hand over his forehead and brought it to rest on his eyes.

He looked up at a knock on his door. “Lou?”

He relaxed at the sound of Ginger’s voice. “Hey, Buddy,” he said. “Come on in.”

Ginger opened the door and stepped inside. “I heard you shouting in your sleep.” He looked troubled in the light streaming in from the hall.

Lou exhaled in displeasure. “Did I wake you up?”

“Yes,” Ginger admitted. “But nevermind that.” He folded his arms. “You were calling for me. At first I wasn’t sure if you might be awake, but then I determined that you were not.”

Lou shook his head and slowly sat up. “I was dreaming about trying to get you out of the water.” He leaned forward, massaging his temples. “I kept not being able to reach you. I got snagged on something and couldn’t get loose.”

Ginger’s eyes narrowed, flickering with his disturbed feelings. “Did you drown?”

“No,” Lou said quickly. “I got free, but it was too late to save you. The dream even changed to the funeral. It was horrible.”

Ginger sat on the bed next to him, resting his hands on his knees. “If I hadn’t jumped in after that bloody wretch . . .”

“You had to go after him,” Lou said. “You couldn’t let him get away, after you went on a rampage with his men. And he might’ve killed me just out of spite if you hadn’t gone after him.”

“Ah. You know, it’s a strange situation,” Ginger mused. “You don’t like when I lose my senses like that, but you seem to always try to justify it.”

Lou sighed. “I know. Maybe because I understand where you’re coming from and it usually makes sense on some level. Mostly I don’t like it because I’m worried about what’ll happen to you.”

“That makes sense.” Ginger looked away.

“Were you dreaming too?” Lou wondered, looking to him.

“Not now. But I have.” Ginger got up and crossed to the window. “Recently I dreamed that I was able to get out of the water after I stabbed that git. I found you lying beaten to death in the warehouse.” He clenched a fist, the bitterness and anger prominent in his voice.

Lou cringed. “I worried about that so much while they had me. I prayed real hard that it wouldn’t happen and I could get away.” He tried to smile. “It’s kind of ironic that it happened because you went there to get revenge for my death.”

Ginger nodded. “But I almost got myself killed for the effort. What a twisted night that was.”

Lou got up and went over to him. “We went from tragedy to joyous reunion in a few hours. It turned out okay. More than.” He sighed. “But hopefully nothing like that will happen again.”

“It had better not.” Ginger frowned. He pushed away from the window. “Do you feel like going back to sleep?”

“I think I’ll try,” Lou nodded. “I always hate going to work exhausted.”

“Agreed.” Ginger walked to the door. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

Lou went back to the bed and climbed onto the soft mattress. “Okay. Night, Ginger.”

“Goodnight.” Ginger stepped into the hall and pulled the door mostly shut after him.

Lou settled under the covers and drew the pillow to him.

They both hated night terrors, but the one good thing was waking up and finding reality just as it should be.
