[Aug. 12] [THG] Jack Umber in Seven
Title: Jack Umber in Seven
Day/Theme: Aug. 12, '13 "Cuckoos lay eggs inside other birds' houses."
Series: Hunger Games trilogy
Character/Pairing: Johanna Mason, OC (Jack Umber), Blight
Rating: G
Author's comment: This is a riff on an idea I discussed with
trovia based on happenings in her excellent fic Spin Control. [I mused about it a bit previously with doodles here.]
Some people came out to see, but not too many. That seemed about right. Johanna was only there because they pretty much made her. She knew she had to. Most of the cameras were turned to Jack Umber as he arrived, but there was bound to be someone focused on capturing her reaction to this odd situation.
Jack, who had set more than one precedent in his day, had also always been quick to jump on ones set by other victors.
"Probably filed h-his- his- you know. Second Finnick's was accepted," Blight had grumbled when he'd heard.
"You shouldn't complain when you're the laid up one who's going to get off the hook because of this," she had countered.
And now here he was. He was still tall in his old age, but a bit bowed with time. Whatever Johanna might say to Blight or other victors about his age to rile them up, Jack really was old. She couldn't speak to the chronology of some of those Capitol geezers she was forced to meet for one reason or another, but that Jack was the oldest district citizen she had ever met, she had no doubt. He had just turned eighty-seven, according to the press release she had skimmed upon learning he would be coming to live here. Maybe he had come as much to die here.
Seven's escort carried out a small suitcase for him, probably as much pleased with the attention Jack was bringing to their ostensibly publicity-starved district as anything else. Johanna was willing to bet she hadn't even known who Jack was specifically until she learned he had been allowed out to Seven.
Jack waved to the people watching, too randomly scattered and small an assortment to be considered a crowd, then reached into the satchel hanging over his shoulder, pulled out a two-toned green cap, and put it on. On top of a darker green background was a pattern of bright green leaves. In front of that was an auburn-colored 7. The colors were a rather close match for his eyes and an echo of what faded strands of his original hue remained in his hair, rendering the cap roughly as flattering as it was ridiculous.
Some reporter was bound to eventually ask Johanna what she thought of Jack. In her mind she tried on, "It was annoyance at first sight," for size.
