[Aug. 8] [Boardwalk Empire] Love in Four Colors

Title: Love in Four Colors
Day/Theme: Aug. 8, 2013 "a strange four-color love"
Series: Boardwalk Empire
Character/Pairing: Richard->Jimmy
Rating: PG
Author's comment: I'm in the midst of watching season 2...

-clear-

Jimmy went and made everything official. He got married. And just because this was exactly what Richard hoped Jimmy would do didn't stop it from stinging a little.

Then, however it happened, Jimmy and Angela talked. They invited him into their new home.

It added to the growing string of kindnesses shown to him by Jimmy. The most meaningful kindnesses that he had ever known.

It was a beach house, full of windows letting in the light. On every side, so much glass. And with it clarity. He would look through from the table to the kitchen where Angela'd be, smiling. He would look back through down the hall and there would be Jimmy, coming to join them.

-blue-

Beyond the happy house that had taken him in stretched the blue of the ocean laid back to back against the blue of the sky. He felt small against this landscape, but it didn't press down on him unpleasantly. There was something freeing about the open air.

Richard walked along the line of the surf, keeping the ocean on his blind side. He didn't fear anything from that direction (perhaps there was nothing logical to fear from the landward side either, but-). Jimmy walked ahead and Richard followed. Tommy ran about between them. The sea smelled good.

-black-

He arose in the blackness of the day's earliest hours and paced the house, seeking to shake his nightmares through movement. He didn't bother with his mask at times like this. He didn't touch a light switch.

Out of the dark came the sound of footsteps. A man's footsteps. There was no need to retreat out of fear of frightening someone. The footsteps stopped. He turned to face Jimmy. "I'm sorry. I. Didn't mean to wake you."

"Nah, it wasn't you. I was awake already anyway. I just thought I'd see what was going on."

"Sometimes it's better. Not to sleep," Richard replied.

"You need somebody to not sleep with you then?"

-red-

Blood didn't get to him. Richard had already seen more than enough of that. He thought more about the necessarily skills, the control, the finesse than the actual killing.

Or he thought about why it was he did these things. He hadn't expected to be killing again back home, but here he was.

He knew why. And if he had to do it over, he'd make the same choice every time. For Jimmy.
