[July 3] [Fate/EXTRA] Finale
Title: Finale
Date/Theme: July 3, "Wide open to the Sun."
Fandom: Fate/EXTRA
Pairing: Saber/Hakuno (Protagonist)
Rating: PG
Wordcount: 550
Notes: Set at the end of the game.
Summary: Hakuno Kishinami sees a dream at the end of things.
In the heart of the Moon Cell, the existence that named itself Hakuno Kishinami is fading.
It's not that Hakuno Kishinami is dying. Somewhere on the Earth, she's alive and asleep, waiting to be woken and healed. But that's the real Hakuno Kishinami. Here in the Moon Cell, there's a small glitch about to go to sleep.
The sea of data surrounds her, and she falls. She disperses. Even Saber's help in holding together won't last her much longer.
Bit by bit, piece by piece, Hakuno's mind disintegrates. It's just data, and this is an ocean of data. It's not that Hakuno Kishinami is dying: she's just rejoining the bits and pieces she came from. But there's one problem--
Saber is in here with her, and Saber is more than just data. Underneath all the bytes, she is as real as the sun, and she shines twice as bright.
The soul that thought it was Hakuno Kishinami falls apart by the Moon Cell's decree, but the soul that always knew it was Saber, the glorious emperor, gathers up the pieces.
So Hakuno sees a dream. She sees the dream that makes up Saber's heart.
In the distance, the sun lies on the horizon.
Hakuno realizes what this is. In her own dissolution, she is seeing her Saber's death. Is that appropriate? Should she see such a painful thing, when the face Saber has always turned to her is one of high spirits?
"It's fine, Praetor." That voice is in her ear and echoing throughout the land. Saber doesn't know how to quiet herself. "I have nothing of mine I would hide from you!"
And Hakuno realizes something else: this isn't what she feared. There is no dagger in Saber's elegant hand. All of that--
Here and now, all of that has already happened. With that realization, the memory coalesces. Before her fading vision, Hakuno sees Saber's body start to fall to a ground stained with both blood and the red light of the sun.
"Praetor!" That voice is in her ear again, but she doesn't have ears anymore, so it's everywhere. "You look in the wrong direction, and you miss my glory. Look to the sun instead!"
That's when Hakuno, or what's left of her, understands.
"Do you see what you have given me, Praetor?" Saber's voice is proud.
Hakuno looks to the sun even though she no longer has eyes, and she sees Saber dancing. No, not dancing. She's left her fallen body behind and she's striding forward with her sword in hand, flashing as she weaves it through the air.
"It's because of you, Praetor! My dream no longer ends with a sorry death, but with my love for you!"
So isn't it fitting--
--that I end the same way?
Hakuno coalesces. No: she doesn't, not really. This is just a dream, a fragment of Saber's soul caught at the heart of the Moon Cell. But still, Hakuno pulls herself together one last time. She's kneeling when she appears in the path of the sun before the advancing Saber. But to greet her Servant, she gets to her feet.
And Hakuno holds out a hand. She forms words one last time. "I don't know about death and dying, Saber. But I'm glad we could share this dream."
