The Night Before the Execution
He was expected to have no honor because he was a thief. And she, no shame because she was a woman who had committed a crime.
She said of the people she hunted, he was her favorite. Chasing him was a more like a game to her. His crimes were petty and he was clever about not getting caught. That made him smile. She was his favorite, too.
“Hey, want to escape with me?” she asked. “I’ll let you come with me on one condition.”
“Oh?”
“Marry me.”
“Wha-?”
“We’re the same, right?” she asked. “So it doesn’t really matter to them. They wanted you to ruin me anyway.”
“I wasn’t going to…”
“I know. You were never that kind of criminal, but if I have a baby willingly, it will protect me while it grows. They don’t know that. It will give me the time I need to free us.”
A wife and a way out? This was sounding better and better.
He kissed her. “We’ll run far away and open a bakery in another kingdom. You bake, I’ll sell. And we’ll raise that kid together.”
“So you agree with my plan?”
“Yes.”
“Alright, let’s make it convincing.”
***
The guard outside their cell had been briefed of the plan, so he was not surprised by the noises he heard. It was a pity, she had been his friend. If only she hadn’t have been revealed as an abomination, this wouldn’t have been her fate. He just wished he didn’t have to hear it.
When morning came, the guard checked on them. The thief was nestled in a corner, looking at the wall. His former companion looked as if she had not moved since the incident occurred. The guard pulled her up and offered her his cloak. She bowed her head and hugged it close. The guard spat in the thief’s direction as he led her away to get cleaned before the execution.
The two prisoners were lead out in chains together. When she bowed her head to have it chopped off, the blade stopped just below her neck, some unseen force was stopping it. While everyone was confused, she pulled her chains apart. She grabbed the thief. Together they ran, following the sunrise.
