[April 1] [Original] Inflection
Title: Inflection
Day/Theme: My voice is my weapon of choice
Series:Original
Character/Pairing: Tanner and Esme
Rating: PG
Tanner and Esme lounged under a tree far enough away from the house that no one would hear them.
"So," Tanner said, tucking his arms behind his head to flop backwards in the grass. The thought of ticks kept Esme up on her elbows, but she did chew on a grass stalk. "Your sister," Tanner went on. "Has a fellow."
"Gentleman caller," Esme agreed. They both turned that over in their heads. Esme and her sister were both part siren, but it was only Lorelei that the innate abilities had shown themselves in. Esme wasn't jealous. She halfway suspected it had been Lorelei's trauma that had brought the ability to the surface, some last ditch defense mechanism flaring loud and desperate to save itself.
"Has she used her voice on him?" Tanner asked, eyes open to mismatched slits. He must've been thinking of the same thing.
"Why would she do that?" Esme asked, scoffing just a little. "He's been a perfect suitor so far. No reason to defend herself."
"Well, you know what they say about what the best defense actually is," Tanner said, grinning. Esme wasn't about to admit she didn't know what he was talking about, so she raised an eyebrow and waited. Subtlety and understatement were not Tanner's strong points at the best of times and no one with as many siblings as he had could resist a chance to tease if he got one.
"We know that with the right inflection, Lorey can tie a man into a knot with the word 'pretzel'," he explained.
"Yeah, so?"
"I'm just saying-" He spread his hands out.
"So say it already!"
"I'm just speculating-" he began again, managing to look both naughty and prim. "On what she could do with a word like 'orgasm'."
"What? Why wou- oh. OH." She went wide-eyed. Tanner just smirked. "Oh my GAWD."
"He's a lucky guy," Tanner agreed. Esme was still aghast, but her big sister instincts managed to break through first.
"Exactly how much thought have you given this?" she demanded. Tanner looked innocent.
"Just enough to be intrigued," he admitted. She gave him a jab in the ribs for making her picture it and he doubled over giggling.
