There was a distinct thing that he and Ennis had in common that Firo didn't share. Not a thing really, but a lack of something. A deadness. A lack of warmth of feeling. An empty space where the ability to love used to be.

Maiza didn't agree- he thought Czeslaw would rediscover it and Ennis would find out she'd had that capacity all along.

And one morning she smiled at him. A rush of heat ran through his system. He felt good. He even considered (just considered, he didn't) smiling back.

Maybe it wasn't dead. Maybe it was only sleeping.
