[Mar. 14] [Fullmetal Alchemist] Social Evolution

Title: Social Evolution
Day/Theme: March 14, 2013 "science is the record of dead religions"
Series: Fullmetal Alchemist
Character/Pairing: Kimblee & his brother
Rating: G

"Did you know," Solf asked his younger brother, though he obviously too young to know, not yet in school, not yet reading, "That some people used to worship the sun?"

"Mmm-mmn," Lon shook his head. "Why'd they do that?"

"Well," he considered it, "They knew it was really powerful- that it created the division between night and day and kept them warm and grew their crops- but they didn't know how it did those things. It was too bright to look at, but they didn't know what it was. I suppose it comes back to those two things basically. It was powerful and they couldn't understand it."

Maybe he didn't quite understand it, but Lon did understand the point of it, which was that his brother, even though he was only a bigger kid, was as smart as an adult. He knew so many things. Lon nodded, to indicate the understanding he didn't possess. Solf probably wasn't all that concerned about him getting it anyway- he just wanted to talk about it. Solf loved to talk, but Mom and Dad didn't always have the time or the patience to listen.

"It doesn't make sense to me why people act like that about things they don't understand."

Lon shrugged. If it was beyond Solf, it was far outside his limited scope of knowledge.

"Then people learn better and they have to come up with something else to fear and try to placate." And, these days, Solf supposed to most people that was God. Alchemy also fell under that banner of the fearful and unknowable. "…Maybe I'll become an alchemist."

That much, at least, made sense to Lon. Alchemists had to study hard and be very smart. "I bet you can do it," he agreed.
